NBN Speed Upgrades Are Live
Your NBN just got faster — make sure your network can keep up
With new Business NBN speed tiers available, many offices discover their internal network is the limiter — not the internet service. Old switches, Wi-Fi, cabling or PCs can cap you at 100 Mb, even on a 250/100 or 500/200 plan.

- ☑ PCs/Laptops: Gigabit (1000 Mb) Ethernet or USB-C/USB-A Gigabit adapter
- ☑ Switches: 10/100/1000 (not 10/100)
- ☑ Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 6/AX APs vs 300 Mb Wi-Fi N
- ☑ Modem/Router: NBN-ready with gigabit LAN
- ☑ Cabling: CAT5e/CAT6 throughout
- ☑ Other devices: segment printers/VoIP/CCTV (VLANs or isolated switch)
The 6 Essential Steps to Unlock Your New Speed
- Check your computers. Older Ethernet adapters are often 100 Mb. Ensure each device supports Gigabit (1000 Mb)
- Replace outdated switches. If any switch is only 10/100, it will cap throughput. Upgrade to 10/100/1000 across the board.
- Upgrade Wi-Fi where needed. Wi-Fi N (≈300 Mb) struggles under load. Move to Wi-Fi 6/AX APs for higher real-world speed and user capacity.
- Confirm your modem/router is gigabit. Legacy routers with 10/100 LAN or basic Wi-Fi will throttle your office — see the Netcomm NF10 vs NF18 spotlight below.
- Verify cabling. Use CAT5e or CAT6 for Gigabit. Old CAT5 or phone cable runs will limit speed and reliability.
- Segment “noisy” devices. Put printers, cameras and VoIP on their own VLAN or switch to keep business-critical traffic fast and stable.
Pro Tip: After upgrades, run a wired speed test from a Gigabit PC connected directly to the router.
Then test via Wi-Fi beside the AP to isolate any remaining bottlenecks.
Router spotlight: Netcomm NF10 vs NF18
A real-world example of how older routing gear can hold back Business NBN speeds.
Feature | Netcomm NF10 (older) | Netcomm NF18 (recommended) |
---|---|---|
LAN ports | 10/100 (Fast Ethernet) | 10/100/1000 (Gigabit) |
Wi-Fi tech | Wi-Fi N (≈300 Mb theoretical) | Dual-band Wi-Fi AC (higher throughput) |
NBN readiness | Legacy ADSL/VDSL era; can cap >100 Mb plans | Designed for modern Business NBN speeds |
Best for | Basic/legacy setups | Business NBN 250/100 and above |
