Upgrading to NBN Fibre to the Premises (FTTP): What You Need to Know

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is continuing to roll out Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) upgrades across Australia. For many homes and businesses, this means faster speeds, greater reliability, and future-proof internet connectivity. If you’ve been told your property is eligible for an FTTP upgrade, here’s what to expect in the process.

1. What is an FTTP Upgrade?

Currently, many properties are connected through Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), where the final stretch from the street to your premises uses copper wiring. An FTTP upgrade replaces that last section with fibre optic cable, giving you a direct fibre connection into your building.

This allows you to access faster NBN plans (up to gigabit speeds, depending on your provider and plan) and enjoy greater stability, especially during peak times.

2. How Do You Become Eligible?

NBN Co is progressively identifying areas that qualify for FTTP upgrades. Generally, you need to:

  • Already be connected via FTTN or FTTC.

  • Order a higher-speed plan (typically NBN 100 or above) from your provider once your area is ready.

  • Have your premises assessed for installation.

WTCO can check your address and confirm if your property is ready for an upgrade.

3. What to Expect During the Installation Process

Step 1: Pre-Installation Check

Once you’ve placed an order for a higher-speed plan, NBN will arrange for a technician to visit. They’ll look at the best way to run fibre into your premises. Sometimes this means using existing conduits; other times new cabling or drilling may be required.

Step 2: External Fibre Work

Technicians will run fibre from the street pit or pole to the outside wall of your property. This may involve digging a small trench, using existing ducts, or attaching cabling overhead.

Step 3: Internal Equipment Installation

Inside your home or business, the technician will install:

  • An NBN utility box (outside, where the fibre enters).

  • An NBN connection box (NTD) inside your property, usually near a power outlet.

From this point, your modem/router will connect directly to the NBN box.

Step 4: Service Activation

Once installation is complete, your new fibre service will be activated. WTCO will help test your connection and ensure your devices are online.

4. How Long Does It Take?

  • Pre-installation visit: Usually within a couple of weeks of placing your order.

  • Full installation: Can take a few hours on the day, depending on complexity.

  • Total time frame: Most upgrades are completed within 2–6 weeks from order.

5. Will There Be Costs?

For most eligible addresses, the upgrade itself is free when you order a higher-speed plan. Additional charges may apply if you request extra cabling work inside your property (e.g., moving the NBN box to another room). WTCO will provide upfront advice if this applies to you.

6. Benefits of FTTP for Homes & Businesses

  • Faster download and upload speeds.

  • More stable connection during busy hours.

  • Better support for multiple devices and cloud services.

  • Future-proofed technology as bandwidth demands grow.
